The cause of scalp hair loss is often much more complex in women than it is in men and may require an extensive medical evaluation.
In addition to genetic influences, women are more likely to be anemic or low in iron from menstruation or diet. They also experience more hormone changes due to pregnancy, menopause, hormone replacement, and birth-control pills.
Other conditions, including hormone imbalances, medications, stress, illness, injury, and diseases of the scalp, can all cause hair loss.
