Follicular unit transplants have ushered in a new era in surgical hair replacement. Hairs grow from the scalp in natural groups called follicular units, containing from one to four hairs. Follicular unit grafting is the transplanting or moving these units to the bald or thinning areas.

Hair Transplant Technology In The 21ST Century

The science of hair transplant surgery has progressed light-years from the early days of large grafts that often produced an unnatural, conspicuous appearance.

Thanks to the development of innovative techniques and advanced instrumentation, the results today are remarkably natural. Even our patients who comb their hair back remain confident that their new hairlines look perfectly natural. (See photos 1 and 2)

Hairs grow from the scalp in natural groups called follicular units, containing from one to four hairs. (See photo 3) Follicular unit grafting involves transplanting or moving these units to the bald or thinning areas.

We begin by taking a thin strip of scalp from the back or sides of the head (the donor area). (See photo 4) This denser zone provides follicles that are genetically pre-destined to grow throughout your lifetime.

This strip is then divided into follicular units. The process demands a highly skilled, precise dissection technique performed under the magnification of stereoscopic microscopes. (See photo 5)

Up to several thousand follicular units can be obtained from one donor strip.

The units are then separated into groups of one to four hairs for placement into the recipient (bald or thinning) area. (See photo 6) The one-hair grafts make up the front of the hairline, and the two-, three- and four-hair grafts are placed behind them. These grafts are placed very close together in a random pattern, mimicking Nature and avoiding any appearance of rows. (See photo 7)

This new method results in hairlines that are very natural in appearance because we are only transplanting hairs as they naturally grow from the scalp. Furthermore, we can provide patients with excellent results in a single surgery. In men, when surgery is combined with an oral medication (Propecia), the results are often even more dramatic. (See photo 8 and 9)

In so-called megasessions, we can transplant between 2,000 and 3500 follicular units in a single session, taking five to 10 hours to complete. This extremely precise and complex procedure requires a profound degree of skill and care by a large, highly trained staff.

The proper and effective performance of the procedure by a physician and assistants demands that they do it often and regularly.

Follicular unit grafting represents the future of hair transplantation. We at Tessler & Aronovitz, P.C., where we perform follicular unit surgery, are in the forefront.

Below is a chart estimating the number of follicular units that can be placed into different common areas of hair loss at one surgical session. Many factors determine the actual number that can be transplanted in a specific individual, and this will be further discussed at your personal consultation.

We have been performing successful hair replacement procedures since 1974.

We will give you an honest, expert opinion. If you are not a surgical candidate, we will tell you so.

As pioneers in follicular unit transplantation, Drs. Tessler & Aronovitz helped open the door to a new era in hair replacement surgery. It is the foundation of our practice.
